Biographical History
Biographical note: Austrian-emigre artist and journalist.
Benedikt Fred Dolbin (originally Pollak) was born in Vienna and graduated from the Technische Hochschule Wien in 1910 as a civil engineer. After early efforts in the construction industry and as a cabaret singer, Dolbin was influenced by the work of Egon Schiele and turned to drawing as a career. From 1926 to 1933 Dolbin worked in Berlin, where he wrote on music and his drawings found their way into newspapers, books, theater programmes, and advertisements. As a Jew, Dolbin fled Nazi Germany in 1935 and settled in New York City, where from 1935 until 1969 he worked for the emigre newspaper "Aufbau" and sold caricature-like sketches of personalities to magazines such as "Musical America" and "Fortune."
