Biographical History

Edward Spencer was the son of Baltimore merchant Edward Spencer (1800-40) and his wife Guinelda Ethelia [Mummey] Spencer (d. 1881?). Spencer attended the Trinity School in Baltimore and Princeton University from 1853-58 when he was awarded an A.M. degree. Spencer returned home to run the family farm "Martin's Nest" in Randallstown from 185? to 1876. In 1876 Spencer moved from Randallstown to Baltimore to become the editorial writer for the Baltimore Evening Bulletin. He moved to the editorial staff of the Baltimore Sun in 1878 and remained there until retiring in 1881. Spencer married Catherine Bradford Harrison (Braddie) in 1861. They had four surviving children: Robert Leigh, Webster Lindsly, Emily (1869-1949) who married Charles S. Hayden, and Katherine Constable (Tat) who married Gellert Alleman.
