Biographical History

Charles Mason (Oakridge Lynch, Gloucestershire, April 1728– Philadelphia, October 25, 1786) was an English astronomer who made significant contributions to 18th-century science and American history, particularly through his involvement with the survey of the Mason-Dixon line, which came to mark the division between the northern and southern United States (1764-1768).

Physicist and historian of science Thomas Darlington Cope received his A.B. (1903) and Ph.D. (1915) from the University of Pennsylvania; he became an instructor and later professor there from 1906-1952. He also studied at the University of Berlin (1912-1913) under Max Planck.
