American author of children's and young adult fiction.
William Lipkind, who wrote many of his books under the pseudonym "Will", was born December 17, 1904 in New York City. He attended City College, B.A. 1927 and Columbia University, Ph.D in 1937. Lipkind did research among the Caraja and Javahe Indians in Brazil; he later taught at the university level. He began his career as an author of children's books in 1947. Lipkind collaborated with illustrator Nicolas Mordvinoff on many books, and the team achieved a lot of critical and commercial success. In 1951 their picture book, The Two Reds, was a runner-up for the Caldecott Award and the following year they won the award for Finders Keepers. Lipkind also wrote young adult fiction, mostly historical adventures that drew upon his background in anthropology and interest in different cultures. William Lipkind died on October 2, 1974
