Lawyer, state legislator, and Governor of Iowa.
George W. Clarke of Adel, Iowa graduated from Oskaloosa College (1877) and the State University of Iowa Law School (1878). As a member of the Republican Party he served in the House of Representatives from 1901 until 1909, held the office of Lt. Governor (1909-1911) and was elected to two terms as governor (1913-1917). He was a proponent of road improvements, election reform, prohibition, women's suffrage, and the extension and beautification of the state capitol grounds. After leaving politics Clarke served for a year as dean of the Drake University Law School before resuming law practice in Adel.
