Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship to the West Indies, 1935-1937

Under the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship, established by Virginia Purdy Bacon in order to promote the fauna of regions outside of the United States, Dr. Blackwelder traveled to the West Indies to study staphylinid beetles. This beetle family is one of the largest animal families, however, it is one of the least known. Although large collections of staphylinid beetles had been made in the United States and Europe, the West Indies had been left virtually unexplored. Destinations: Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Grenada, Antigua, St. Thomas, Trinidad, Tobago, Caracou, St. Vincent, Union, Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Greater Antilles.
