Biographical History

John Chandler Smith was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Denver, Colorado. He was raised in Hood River, Oregon, and graduated from Hood River High School in 1938. He was married to Dorothy Tabb for 36 years when he passed away in the spring of 2005. He received his B.A. from the University of Oregon in 1941 and an M.D. from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1944. He worked as a pathologist at institutions in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Washington D.C., and Missouri. According to his wife, "Anti-war and nonviolence were the main motivating factors in Chandler's adult life. Mahatma Gandhi was his hero." Dorothy and Chandler traveled extensively as he studied disease and medical practices throughout the world. He wrote copious notes while traveling and wrote manuscripts, some of which were later published.
