Biographical History

Born in Des Moines County, Iowa, Carl Theophilus Widen (1884-1985), was the son of Swedish immigrants Carl August Widen and Gustava Peterson. After attending Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska, and Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, Widen graduated from the University of Texas in 1902. Working as an assistant cashier of the American National Bank in Austin, Texas, until 1918, Widen eventually became a partner of law firm Bohn Bros. In 1917, he married Austin native Edna Bohn, with whom he had three children: Alma Gustava, Edna Augusta, and Eleanor Hilda. In addition to his business endeavors, Widen played the violoncello at different venues in Austin, was involved in the Swedish Order of the North Star, and promoted Swedish heritage in Texas.
