Biographical History

Frank D. Paine, a native of Burt, Iowa, received his B.S. (1909) from Iowa State College (University). After graduation, he was emplyed by General Electric in New York State and an electric plant in Iowa. From 1912-1942, he served in various capacities at Iowa State, including Electrical Engineering Instructor and later as head of the General Engineering Dept. (1925-1942). He also worked on Iowa rural electrification (1924-1926) and in other industry jobs in the state. Frank D. Paine is remembered particularly for coining the name of "VEISHEA" for Iowa State's student-run celebration (begun in 1922). The VEISHEA acronym contain the first letters of Iowa State's colleges: Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics, Agriculture. Paine also was instrumental in the construction of Iowa State's Memorial Union and also served as the mayor of Ames.
