Americans Committed to World Responsibility

Americans Committed to World Responsibility; formed in 1960 at the University of Michigan in response to President John F. Kennedy's challenge to students to aid in the developing countries of the world, emphasizing the need for personal contribution and sacrifice on the part of the volunteers; he announced his vision for what would become the Peace Corps while standing on the steps of the University of Michigan Union; in response, the students, headed by Judy and Alan Guskin, formed Americans Committed to World Responsibility; from the Michigan campus these ideas spread to campuses throughout the Midwest and then throughout the United States. Kennedy formally announced plans to form the Peace Corps on Nov. 2, 1960 in San Francisco.
