Biographical History

James E. Callaway was born in Trigg County, Kentucky, on July 7, 1835, the son of Samuel Taylor Callaway and Mary Hamilton (Means) Callaway. He graduated from Eureka College in Illinois and read law in the offices of Richard Yates. At the start of the Civil War James gave up his law practice and enlisted as a captain in the 21st Illinois Volunteers. He eventually was in command of this regiment as a lieutenant colonel.

After the war he resumed his law practice. In 1871 President U.S. Grant appointed Callaway secretary of Montana Territory, a position he held until 1877. He served several terms in the Montana Legislative Assembly and was a delegate to the constitutional conventions of 1885 and 1889. He was also district judge in Virginia City. James E. Callaway married Mary Elizabeth Link in 1866. He died August 21, 1905.

Their son Llewellyn L. Callaway was born on December 15, 1868. Llewellyn was educated at the University of Michigan and received a degree in law. He returned to Montana to practice in Virginia City and White Sulphur Springs. He was also a mayor of Virginia City and a justice of the Montana Supreme Court. He died August 8, 1951.
