Burt Scott was a resident of Hancock County, Indiana. He enlisted as a private on 24 October 1862 and was mustered into the Indiana 53rd Infantry. Following this the regiment moved on to Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and finally Georgia. It was there at the Battle of Nickajack Creek that Scott was shot through the chest while he carried the regimental flag and died on the field.
