Biographical History
J. G. Baker was born January 13, 1834 in Guisborough, North Yorkshire, England. He was educated at Quaker schools in Ackworth and York including Bootham School, “the nursery” of many Quaker naturalists. Baker worked at the library and herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London between 1866 and 1899. He was also keeper of the herbarium from 1890 to 1899. During his lifetime he wrote handbooks on many different plant groups. He married Hannah Unthank in 1860, and the couple had a son who also became a botanist, Edmund Gilbert Baker.
