Biographical History

Thomas read was born at Rochester, N.Y. on May 28, 1881. He came to Mich. in 1889 and was educated in the public schools, the Ferris Institute at Big Rapids, and the University of Michigan, graduating from the law dept. of the latter in 1913. He practiced law for a number of years in Shelby, while also serving as a township clerk, village counselor, and member of the school board. He served in the State House as a Republican from 1915-1920, and was elected Speaker in his last term. In 1920 and again in 1922, he was elected Lt. Governor in the Alexander Groesbeck administration. He was chosen to be state senator from the 26th District from 1927 to 1929, and then elected again as Lt. Governor from 1935 to 1937. He was elected Attorney General Nov. 8, 1838. He tried and failed in 1940 for the GOP nomination for governor and failed again in 1942 for lt. governor. He went back to practice law in Shelby. He died in Shelby on Apr. 7, 1962.
