Lieutenant general, United States Army; chief engineer, Sixth Army.
Samuel Davis Sturgis, III (b. July 16, 1897, St. Paul, Minn.-d. July 5, 1964, Washington, D.C.), U.S. Army general, graduated from West Point in 1918. He taught mathematics at the Academy until assigned to the Philippines as Adjutant of the 14th Engineers. Returning to the Pacific area during World War II, he was chief engineer of the 6th Army, building roads, airfields, ports, and bases from New Guinea to the Philippines. He served as senior engineer for the U.S. Air Forces following the War, and in 1952 was appointed commanding general, Communications Zone, supporting the U.S. Army in Europe. General Sturgis became Chief of Engineers in 1953.
