Russian-born Emil John Lever (1894-1975) worked as the president and founder of Cooperative Distributors, Inc., from 1923 to 1936 becoming the editor of Consumer's Defender in 1934. He organized over 200 CIO Consumer Collective Bargaining Clubs during the 1930s. Lever served the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) as a field director in the North Atlantic seaboard area from 1936 to 1939. From 1941 to 1943, he served as a CIO consultant to Sidney Hillman on the National Defense Training Program. Lever also served as the Director of the Labor Education Association for the Philadelphia area of the United Steelworkers of America. He also co-authored with Francis Goodell Labor-Management Cooperation and How to Achieve It (1948).
