Biographical History
Physics professor at Carnegie Mellon University (1968-1993). Received A.B. from Stanford University and Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University (1929). Before teaching at CMU, he instructed at Washington University (1935-1937), City College, New York (1937-1940), Washington State College (1940-1942), University of Chicago (1945-1951), and Texas A&M University (1966-1968) where he served as Dean of the College of Science. Zener also served as associate director and later director of Westinghouse Electric Corporation Labs (1951-1965). Awards include: Bingham Award (1957); Wetherill Medallion of the Franklin Institution (1959); Albert Souvenur Achievement Social Medal (1965) and Gold Medal (1974); and the Von Hippel Award (1982). Zener held memberships in the National Academy of Science and the Fellow American Physical Society. Research include the development of the Zener Diode, a voltage regulator, and ocean thermal energy conversion.
