Biographical History
Willard Gordon Wyman (1898-1969) was born in Augusta, Missouri. He attended Bowdoin College in 1917, and was commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps from West Point in 1919. During World War II, Wyman was assigned to several posts including Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations in 1942 and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at Allied Force Headquarters from 1942 to 1943. He earned the rank of Brigadier General in November 1943 and Major General in November 1944, and from 1944 to 1945, he served as Commanding General of the 71st Infantry Division. After World War II, Wyman served as Commanding General of the IX Corps in the Korean War, from 1951 to 1952, and of Allied Land Forces in Southeastern Europe from 1952 to 1954. He served as Commanding General of the Continental Army Command from 1956 to 1958 when he retired. Wyman received the Distinguished Service Cross, three Distinguished Service Medals, the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and two Bronze Stars.
