Born in Sandisfield, Mass., Sept.8, 1322; moved with his parents to Richland, Kalamazoo Co., Mich., 1822; farming; grad. from University of Mich., 1849; stud.law & was admit. to practice at Battle Creek, 1850; settled in Kalamazoo, 1852; attorney of Kalamazoo Co., 1854-60; superintend. of schools, 1853-56; trustee of the village, 1866; lieutenant-governor of Mich., 1867-69; in war of 1861-66, private, then lieut. colonel, & brevet. brig. general; member of various societies; d. in Kalamazoo, Jan. 28, (Biogr.
