Biographical History

The Jenkins family members represented in this collection were among the fifth generation descendants of Thomas Jenkins, who with his wife Ann, settled in Charles County, Md. in 1669 or 70. Louis William Jenkins and Thomas Robert Jenkins, both correspondents in these papers, were two of a number of family members who attended Georgtown College. The Maryland branch of the Jenkins family is among the more prominent old Catholic families of the state, producing generations of successful industrialists and merchants, clergy, scholars and professionals. Family members have been patrons of both Catholic and secular institutions in Maryland, including Loyola College and Johns Hopkins University. The family's history is intertwined with the history of Catholicism and the Jesuits in Maryland. The Jenkins name is associated with historic parishes in both Charles and Baltimore counties, such as St. Ignatius at St. Thomas Manor, St. Joseph's, Pomfret, and St. John the Evangelist at Long Green, as well as the old cathedral in Baltimore City.
