Biographical History

Maude Frazier was born in 1881 in Wisconsin, where she was educated as a teacher. After moving to Nevada, she taught throughout the state. She also served as principal in several schools and was appointed Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Superintendent of Schools. After her retirement from teaching, Frazier was elected to the Nevada State Assembly for six terms and was appointed Lieutenant Governor, the first woman to serve in the position. Frazier was also instrumental in the establishment of the Nevada Southern University campus, which evolved into UNLV; she had a building on the campus named in her honor. She died in 1963.
