Biographical History
The Australian branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers was established in 1852; it became the Amalgamated Engineering Union in 1920.
The Amalgamated Society of Engineers was founded in England in 1851, an Australian Section being established the following year. The Australian union was registered with the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Court in 1905. In 1920 the A.S.E. amalgamated with ten other engineering and allied trade unions to form the Amalgamated Engineering Union. The Australian Section of the A.E.U. was registered in 1921, but was deregistered for a period during 1938. Women were not admitted to the Union until 1943.
