Biographical History

John J. "Jack" Tommaney was born August 25, 1920 in Albany, N.Y. He graduated from Fordham University with a B.S. degree in 1942. Following graduation, Tommaney volunteered for the "ski troops" and entered military service at Fort Dix, New Jersey on February 17, 1943. Initially, he was assigned to the 86th Infantry Regiment at Camp Hale, Colorado. In August 1943, Tommaney transferred to the 90th Infantry Regiment, returning to 2nd Battalion of the 86th in November 1943. Although he trained in heavy weapons and helped to create the battalion's heavy weapons company at Camp Swift, Tex., he was assigned as company clerk for the 2nd Battalion headquarters, a position which he held during the 10th Mountain Division's Italian Campaign. During combat operations in Italy, Tommaney was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star Medal. He died on May 23, 1998 in New York City.
