Biographical History
Jonathan Carver (1710-1780) was an English soldier who traveled across Wisconsin into Minnesota and back across Lake Superior in 1766-1768 in order to examine the frontier recently won from the French.
Carver's and Rogers journals and related documents are published and a copy is in the Clarke Historical Library. Rogers commanded the British soldiers who took Fort Pontchartrain from the French in 1760, ending French rule in Detroit. Carver was a British Capt. and explorer in what became the northwestern United States. (For further information see the Dictionary of American Biography v. II p. 42 (Carver) and v. VIII p. 108-9 (Rogers).).
