Biographical History

The Chenango Twenty Townships, known also as Governor's Purchase or Clinton's Purchase, was acquired by the State from the Oneidas in 1788 and patented to individuals between 1792 and 1794. The surveyor, Matthew Calkins (1739-1800) was of Columbia County, New York. During the Revolution he scouted the Otsego and Chenango County area, finally residing in New Berlin, Chenango County, New York.
