Biographical History
A native of Massachusetts, William Dummer acted as governor and commander in chief of Masssachusetts Bay from the departure of Samuel Shute in 1723 to the arrival of William Burnett in 1728. He conducted Dummer's War (which his predecessor had declared in 1722 against the Abenaki Indians of Maine) mainly on Massachusetts' northern and western frontiers.
William Dummer was the lieutenant governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1716 to 1730.
In the early 1720's, the Abenaki or Eastern Indians of northern New England were allied with France.
Alarmed by colonial encroachment on their lands, the Abenaki Indians retaliated in open warfare in 1722. Dummer's War, named after Massachusetts Governor William Dummer, lasted until 1726.
