From the guide to the Herman Kenin papers, 1935-1970, (Oregon Historical Society Research Library)

Herman Kenin (1902-1970) grew up in Portland and attended Reed College in 1930, then Northwestern College of Law and was admitted to the Oregon Bar.

He was a violinist, first with the Geogre Olsen orchestra and then as a leader of his own band. In 1936 he was elected president of Portland's Local 99 of the American Federation of Musicians and in 1943 he gave up his law profession to make a career as a union executive and made many important advances for labor, earning him a place on Nixon's list of enemies.
