Biographical History
Edward Jesup Wood (1834-1873) was born in Florida and raised by his maternal grandmother in Connecticut. He graduated from Dartmouth College, N.H., and moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he designed the Michigan, Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad between Toledo and Goshen, Indiana. He moved to Goshen in 1857 where he practiced law. Wood married Jane Williams (1835-1892) and the union bore two children. He served as Elkhart County Surveyor from 1859-1861 and in November 1861 enlisted in the 48th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He first served as a captain in Company "I" (which he raised) raised and was promoted to colonel in July 1863. After the Civil War he returned to Elkhart County to practice law. He was elected Ciruit Court and Common Pleas Court Clerk in 1865 and a Judge of Common Pleas in 1870. He died in Jackson, Michigan.
