Stuart left Scotland at the age of 22 and was employed by the North West Fur Company and became a partner in Astor's Pacific Fur Company. He sailed from New York for the Columbia in 1810 on the Tonquin and traveled back in 1812-1813. He headed the upper Lake region of the American Fur Company, with headquarters at Micilimackinac, Michigan Territory (later known as Mackinac Island). Born in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, Feb. 19, 1785; came to Montreal in 1807 and served in office of provincial attorney general. From 1810-13 was associated with John Jacob Astor. The affair ended in failure; in 1819 Astor sent him to Mackinac as agent of Am. Fur Co. , and he was a powerful factor in fur trade of Northwest until about 1834. In 1835 he made his home in Detroit, where he was active in church and business. He was state treasurer from 1840-41, and Supt. of Indian Affairs for Mich., from 1841-45. He was appointed commissioner to construct the canal connecting the Chicago and Ill. rivers, and died suddenly, Oct. 29 1848. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit. In 1810 he married Elizabeth Emma Sullivan of Brooklyn, N. Y. MMQ. (blue index cards)
