Washburn was a judge on the Massachusetts Court of Common Pleas (1844-1847), Governor of Massachusetts (1854-1855), and professor at Harvard Law School (1856-1876).

Emory Washburn (1800-1877) was born in Leicester, Mass., the son of Joseph and Ruth Davis Washburn. He practiced law in Worcester, Mass., served one term as governor of Massachusetts, and was on the faculty of Harvard Law School.
