Biographical History
When the Presbyterian Church of England was reconstituted as a Synod in 1843, the first steps taken included the formation of a Foreign Missions Committee and the sending out of its first missionary to China in 1847. The largest part of the Mission was in China, its work concentrated in South Fujian, East Guangdong and Taiwan. The Mission's work extended to Singapore and Malaysia in 1881. Work began in the Rajshahi district of Bengal, India in 1862. The Mission's interests in theological education and the healing ministry gave rise to such institutions as the Taiwan Theological College and the Swatow Mission Hospital. During World War II, the offices of the Presbyterian Church of England in London were destroyed.
