Biographical History
Lawrence Van Derveer (1740-1815), a revolutionary era physician, and his son, Dr. Henry Van Derveer (1792?-1874), both of Somerset County, N.J. (Bedminster Township and Somerville). Dr. Lawrence Van Derveer, a founder of the Medical Society of New Jersey in 1766 and its president in 1784, was best known for his studies of the plant scutellaria lateriflora as a cure for hydrophobia (rabies). His son, Dr. Henry Van Derveer, also president of the Society in 1836, is credited with prescribing smaller doses and advocating the use of terchloride of carbon before chloroform was in use.
