Biographical History

The Douglas Aircraft Company was founded by Donald Wills Douglas, Sr. in Santa Monica, Calif. in 1921. The company initially built aircraft bombers as a government contractor, but became widely popular with the introduction of their "DC" (Douglas Commercial) model aircraft. Many of these models were used for military troop transport. Douglas Aircraft merged with McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in 1967 but remained a wholly owned subsidiary of the company continuing to manufacture aircraft. The new firm McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997.
