Biographical History
Actual planning for a new Social Science Complex to be built on the Evanston campus of Northwestern University began in 1967. The planning involved not only designing a building to accommodate the programs that it would house but also selecting the programs to fit the building. The source of funding for the building was a grant of $5 million from Nathaniel and Martha Leverone. This grant was made in August, 1968. Mr. Leverone died on May 29, 1969. The first reference to the Social Science Complex as Leverone Hall is dated December 5, 1969. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on July 8, 1970, at which Mrs. Leverone participated. The move of academic departments into Leverone began in the fall of 1972 and dedication ceremonies took place that November. The committee finished most of its work by early 1973.
In October, 1975, planning began for a major remodeling of the third floor of Leverone Hall. A large-scale undertaking with several revisions of plans, the project was not completed until June, 1977.
