Neil McCullough Clark was born in Croton, Ohio in December 1890. After graduating from Harvard University in 1912, he moved to Chicago to work for A. W. Shaw company as editor of System Magazine . In October 1913, he married Pearl Himmelman. In 1921, he left the company to become a successful free-lance writer. During most of this years as a free-lance writer he and his family lived in Cedar Crest, New Mexico. He is the editor and author of several books on the American West and over the years has contributed more than 700 articles on a wide variety of subjects to some 65 journals and magazines.

Clark's pseudonym was John Kedder Rhodes
