Biographical History

Staff Sergeant (SSG) John Sayers was inducted into the Army on 23 December 1942. He received a six-month deferment because he was the sole supporter of his mother. Sayers received his training at Fort Dix and was stationed with the 12th Armored Division at Fort Campbell, KY. He was transferred to B Company, 51st Armored Battalion, 4th Armored Division, and sailed to England. Sayers landed on Omaha Beach after D-Day and took part in relieving the 4th Infantry Division. He completed reconnaissance missions, took part in the siege of the submarine base Lorient, and took part in the attack on Chateau Salience where he was wounded twice. He was injured a third time when an American tank was destroyed by German anti-tank fire. He was hospitalized in England, moved to Mason General Hospital in New York, then to a hospital at Camp Pickett, VA. He was discharged from the Army on 31 July 1945.
