Biographical History
Charles Ash Way was born 29 December 1897, in Embreeville, Pennsylvania, and played football on the undefeated 1915 East Downingtown High School team, making 32 of the season's 33 touchdowns. Charley Way entered Penn State in 1916, and played football that year as a walk on. He left to serve in the Army during World War I and returned in 1919, playing on both the varsity track and football teams. The undersized halfback was named to Walter Camp's All American team of 11 players in 1920. He also held the record for broad jump while at Penn State. After graduating from Penn State with a degree in finance, he played professional football briefly, achieving All-Pro status in 1924, and coached football at Allentown High School, the University of Dayton, and Virginia Tech. He went on to a long career with the Internal Revenue Service. His interest in sports continued, and in 1980 he was honored at the Penn State-Nebraska game commemorating Penn State's 1920 win over Nebraska. Charles Way died 31 January 1988.
