Biographical History

Nathaniel Evans, an early settler in the Mississippi and Louisiana Territories, was a merchant and postmaster at Fort Adams, Mississippi, and owner of Oakland Plantation in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. His widow, Sarah, inherited Oakland upon his death in 1819, and later the family acquired Hazelwood Plantation. She also managed Orange Grove Plantation with the aid of her son, John, following the death of her son-in-law, Captain John DeHart.
