John A. Lewis was born at "Bel-air" near Frankfort, Ky. in 1841. He attended public schools in Franklin County, Ky. and received his B.A. degree from Georgetown College (Georgetown, Ky.) in 1862. One month after his graduation Lewis enlisted in Company I, Second Kentucky Cavalry, Colonel John H. Morgan's Regiment. For two and half years Lewis served in the Ninth Kentucky Regiment under Morgan as he made his raids through Kentucky and Tennessee.
After the war, John A. Lewis began teaching and at the same time took up the study of medicine. Lewis entered the Medical College of Virginia at Richmond in 1866, graduated in 1868 and returned to Kentucky to practice medicine near Frankfort. In 1869 he began practicing in Georgetown, Ky. where he remained until his retirement in 1909. Lewis served as a trustee of Georgetown College (1875-1909) and as chairman of the board of trustees from 1896 to 1908. He also served as president of the Society of Morgan's Men as well as being president of the Kentucky Medical Society in 1896.
