Biographical History

Born in Charleston, Massachusetts, David L. Huntington, 1834-1899, studied medicine at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the army as an Assistant Surgeon in 1862. Huntington was Acting Medical Director Army of the Tennessee during Sherman's march to the sea in 1864. A career medical officer, Lt. Colonel Huntington at times served as acting Surgeon General. He also was director of the U.S. Army Medical Museum for many years before his retirement in 1898.

The Surgeon General of the Army's Office issued Circular Letter no. 20, War Department, on April 15, 1924. It was sent to all current and retired officers of the United States Army Medical Corps and required each of them, upon their retirement from the Army, to submit a brief account of their life history to the Librarian of the Army Medical Library.

The Library of the Surgeon General of the United States Army, begun in 1836, was the nucleus of the National Library of Medicine's collections. In 1922 it was renamed the Army Medical Library, then the Armed Forces Medical Library in 1952. It remained under the Surgeon General's authority until 1956 when it was transferred to the Public Health Service and renamed the National Library of Medicine.
