Benjamin Trumbull (1735-1820) was the eldest son of Benjamin and Mary Brown Trumbull of Hebron, Ct. After studying under the Rev. Elijah Lathrop, Trumbull entered Yale and graduated in 1759. He was ordained a minister in 1760 and was installed as the minister of the Congregational Church in North Haven, Ct. He remained there for the rest of his life, except for a six month period while he served as a chaplain in the army during the Revolutionary War.
Trumbull wrote a history of Connecticut which took over twenty years to complete but remained the best work on Connecticut for a century. He then began a three volume history of the United States, but died after one volume was written. He also published various articles concerned with political and religious matters.
