Biographical History

Charles Haywood Holland was born in Townshend, Vermont, on October 2 1840, and died in Brattleboro, Vermont, on January 22, 1918. His father was Thomas Jefferson Holland, a farmer and his mother was Nancy Haywood Holland. Charles Holland served twice in the Civil War, first as a 9 month enlistee into the 5th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. After graduating from Leland and Gray Seminary in Townshend, Vermont, he had been teaching in Somerville, Mass. at the time of this enlistment. He served with the 5th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry from August 25, 1862, to July 2, 1863. He then reenlisted and served from September 1, 1864, to June 1, 1865, with Company H, 8th Vermont Volunteers. Charles Holland never married. After the war, he worked at a plantation off Beaufort, South Carolina, growing cotton. Later, he lived in New York City, where he worked for the Continental and Herald Square Hotels, until his retirement in 1913. He spent the rest of his life in Brattleboro, Vermont.
