Committee appointed to arrange public celebration in Concord of second centennial of incorporation of town, Sept. 12, 1835. At town meeting in Mar. 1835, a committee (Daniel Shattuck, Edward Jarvis, Edmund Hosmer, et al.) was chosen to make recommendations on proposed celebration. At Apr. town meeting, committee recommended celebration "by a public procession & oration under the direction of a large committee of arrangements" and appropriation of funds for the purpose. Committee of Arrangements included Nathan Brooks, Daniel Shattuck, Phineas Howe, Josiah Bartlett, Reuben Brown, William Munroe.
(Cont.) and others. At May 1835 town meeting, John Keyes was elected Chairman. Invited guests included representatives of state and national government as well as prominent local citizens. Concord resident Ralph Waldo Emerson delivered oration. Committee of Arrangements reported on expenses of celebration at town meeting, Nov. 1835. Amount appropriated by town coupled with amount raised by private subscription being insufficient to cover costs, committee members made up deficiency.
