Biographical History

Letter from Charley Wittemann to his brother Adolph Wittemann describing the effects of the San Francisco earthquake. Wittemann writes of the noise of the earthquake, of the subsequent fires ("my hotel was in flames in 35 minutes"), and the lack of postage stamps. He also writes that he and his father had "lost everything," including their workshop, had slept in a trolley car, in the woods, and in a tent, and were struggling to find food. In German. Also includes a typed German version and an English translation.
