Biographical History

The Fourth Pennsylvania Battalion was organized 2 January - 11 February 1776 at Chester to consist of 8 companies from Chester, Bucks and Lancaster Counties. The regiment was commanded by Anthony Wayne. It was assigned to the Middle Department (Feb. 27 - Mar. 15), Canadian Department (Mar. 15- July 2), and Northern Department (July 2 - Nov. 18) and took part in the Canadian invasion. Over the winter of 1776-1777 it was reorganized as as the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment.
