Biographical History
The first courses in home economics at the University of Nevada were offered in 1901, and were taught within the structure of the College of Agriculture. In 1954, the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation of Nevada provided financing for a new agriculture building. In recognition, the College of Agriculture was named the Max C. Fleischmann College of agriculture, and the home economics unit of the college was named the Sarah Hamilton Fleischmann School of Home Economics. The school offered programs in child development and family life, clothing and textiles, food and nutrition, home economics education and community service, and shelter and environment. In February 1989, in a reorganization to consolidate programs having a common focus on human and community resource development, the School of Home Economics was incorporated into the College of Human and Community Sciences.
