Journalist, man of letters, publisher of the Manchester Examiner and Times, 1846-1886.
Alexander Ireland, journalist, was born in Edinburgh and worked as a businessman and publisher of the Manchester examiner. He was a book lover, book collector, and friend of authors, including Carlyle, Emerson, Hunt, and Hazlitt. He produced a bibliography of Hunt and Hazlitt and a biography of Emerson, but was best known for The book-lover's enchiridion (1882).
