Biographical History

SNCC was founded in 1960 at the close of the Raleigh Conference, held at Shaw University, Raleigh, NC. It was a meeting of Southern student sit-in leaders and northern student supporters. In May, 1960, the committee held its first meeting in Atlanta. SNCC was composed of representatives from 16 southern states and the District of Columbia. Its basic purpose was the coordination of activities within the civil rights movement.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created in 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its purpose was to coordinate the student protest movement. SNCC led voter registration drives in Mississippi and other southern states, held civil rights demonstrations advocating social integration, and sponsored the Freedom Summer of 1964 in Mississippi.
