Thomas wrote Lincoln's New Salem (1934) and Lincoln, 1847-1853 (1936) during his tenure as executive secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Association (1932-1936). As an independent writer, Thomas produced Portrait for Posterity: Lincoln and His Biographers (1947); Theodore Weld, Crusader for Freedom (1950) and Abraham Lincoln, A Biography (1952) and edited Three Years with Grant (1955). He was working on a biography of Edwin Stanton at the time of his death in 1956 which Harold Hyman finished and published in 1962.
