Katz, Erich.

Composer, musicologist, teacher, and performer, Erich Katz (1900-1973) was one of the founders of the early-music movement in America and the Musical Director of the American Recorder Society from 1951 to 1959. Born in Germany, he received his Ph.D. in Musicology from the Musicological Seminary in Freiburg, Germany. He immigrated to England two weeks before the war began. In 1943 he came to New York City and from 1944 taught at the New York College of Music, City College of New York, and the New School for Social Research. In 1959 he retired from teaching and moved to Santa Barbara, California where he lived until his death in 1973.
